Multiple Missing Teeth
Multiple Missing Teeth in Overland Park, KS
Dental implants can be used to treat any number of missing teeth. Often times, patients will lose a single tooth due to injury or gum disease. Unfortunately, dentures can only be used to replace multiple teeth, and a fixed bridge risks damaging the adjacent teeth. Dental implants are a great option in this case.
Dental implants are widely considered to be the best option for single tooth replacements. Because they replicated the structure of a regular tooth root and are able to fuse with the body, dental implants are thought to be the most natural treatment. During a process called osseointegration, the titanium implants become integrated with the existing bone tissue to form an exceptionally strong foundation. This enables the dental implants to function as natural teeth would and preserve surrounding bone and tissue. Activities such as eating and speaking are easier than with dentures. Although, the crown may need to be replaced with extended use, dental implants are a more long term solution.
In addition to single tooth replacement, dental implants are now viewed as the standard for replacing multiple missing teeth. While a partial bridge is probably the most common treatment, it is not the best. The structure of a bridge requires that adjacent teeth be permanently altered to support the structure. This involves the grinding and reshaping of the teeth acting as anchors. Studies show that bridges often cause irreparable damage to otherwise healthy teeth. Bridges also do not stimulate the jawbone, allowing for deterioration. Dental implants protect bone mass and preserve the existing facial structure. Because dental implants cannot be removed without additional surgery, problems such as slippage are eliminated. This further contributes to the longevity and permanency of the treatment.
Dental implants are quickly becoming the highest standard for treatment of missing teeth. They play a crucial role in the prevention of bone loss and facial structure. Previous treatments such as dentures and bridges were found to lead to further complications. Dental implants are not only the most comfortable solution, but the most sustainable as well.
